West Hollywood : Police Initiative Delayed

Share

The citizens committee pushing a ballot initiative to establish an independent police department in West Hollywood is now setting its sights on the November ballot, organizers say.

Leaders of the effort previously said they hoped to gather the 3,057 signatures they need by the end of January to get the measure on the June ballot. But Howard Armistead, founder of West Hollywood Citizens for Better Police Protection, said that deadline was impossible to meet. He said the group is only now gearing up to get the required signatures by late spring.

The committee will have to do so without Armistead, who said he was moving this week to Washington to help organize a national gay rights march scheduled for next year.

Since the city incorporated in 1984, it has contracted for police services with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
