INDOOR SOCCER

As expected, Socker defensive runner Wes Wade was named to the West team for next week’s All-Star game in Baltimore. Wade replaces departed teammate Brian Quinn, who is committed to a South American tour with the U.S. national team.

It will be Wade’s first All-Star appearance in his three-year career. More importantly, however, his addition adds a degree of respect to his position; it marks the first time in the league’s 14 years that a defensive runner has been named to the All-Star team.

The Sockers announced a new halftime promotion that will guarantee one fan of winning $1,000 in a shot-on-goal contest at each of the Sockers’ final 11 home games, beginning with tonight’s game against last year’s championship series foe, the Cleveland Crunch.

“The idea behind the contest isn’t to try and entice people into the arena just to win money,” said Oscar Ancira, managing general partner. “But (rather) to reward the fans that have been supporting the Sockers throughout the years.”

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego State turned a one-point halftime deficit into a 74-51 rout in a first-place showdown with Utah in front of 559 at Peterson Gym.

Freshman Falisha Wright scored 19 of her 21 points and Kieishsha Garnes 14 of her 22 in the second half to allow SDSU (13-6, 5-1) to remain in a tie for first in the Western Athletic Conference. Utah fell to 14-5, 4-2. SDSU plays host to Brigham Young on Saturday. BYU and Creighton are also 5-1 in the WAC.

SDSU trailed, 29-28, at the half, and it was tied at 39 with 13:08 left before the Aztecs went on an 11-0 run and never looked back. Garnes had a game-high 10 rebounds, and Michelle Miles a game-high nine assists.

SDSU made 16 of 25 shots (64%) in the second half after making only 12 of 32 (37.5%) in the first 20 minutes.

Susana Tauteoli led the Utes with 18 points.

In the first round of the women’s Indoor Championships, USD’s Laura Richard fell to Cal senior Lisa Albano, 6-7 (2-7), 6-0, 6-3. Albano is ranked 14th.
