Lifeguards Issue Warning on Dangerous Conditions
Three drownings last weekend off the Palos Verdes Peninsula prompted county lifeguards Friday to warn beach-goers about slippery rocks and unpredictable surf and tides.
Last Saturday, three fishermen were tossed into the ocean at Portuguese Point in Rancho Palos Verdes. The oldest of the group drowned, but his grandson and nephew survived, lifeguard Capt. Bob Buchanan said. The following afternoon, rescuers were unable to save two men fishing at Lunada Point. “They were out on the rocks, and a wave came and washed them off,” he said.
Buchanan said the closest lifeguard stations to the rugged coastline of Rancho Palos Verdes and Palos Verdes Estates are in Torrance and at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro. But the shoreline, with its inlets and coves, remains popular for fishing and strolling.
