Put Rape Coverage in Another Section

Share

Since when is rape a sport? Based on your recent coverage, not only of the Mike Tyson trial, but also of other athletes’ sexual assault “exploits,” one would conclude that The Times does consider rape to be a sport, of interest to sports fans who read the sports section of The Times.

I, for one, and many friends and acquaintances of both sexes, are highly offended by your use of rape and sexual assault to add sensationalism to the sports section. We strongly request that this type of news be covered elsewhere in The Times.

PETER B. PITSKER, San Juan Capistrano

Editor’s note: The Times certainly does not consider rape to be a sport. The sports section deals with news about sports and the athletes in those sports. When the former heavyweight boxing champion, or any other prominent athlete, is charged with a serious crime, and made to stand trial for it, that is obviously news.
