NHL ROUNDUP : Bondra Powers the Capitals, 6-2

Share

Peter Bondra is making amends for a mediocre rookie season with the Washington Capitals.

Bondra, born in the Soviet Union, played in Czechoslovakia for two years before joining the Capitals last season. In 54 games Bondra had only 12 goals and failed to score in four playoff games.

The right wing celebrated his 24th birthday Friday night at Landover, Md., by leading the Capitals to a 6-2 victory that ended the New York Rangers’ eight-game (6-0-2) unbeaten streak.

Bondra scored two goals and assisted on two others as the Capitals moved to within six points of the Rangers atop the Patrick Division.

Toronto 4, Detroit 3--Glenn Anderson scored with 2:33 remaining at Detroit to cap a comeback and lead the surging Maple Leafs to their fifth victory in the last six games.

Until put on a line with newly acquired Doug Gilmour, Anderson, twice a 50-goal scorer at Edmonton, had been having a bleak season. But his winning goal, his second of the game, gave him 11 goals in the last eight games.

Minnesota 2, Buffalo 0--Goaltender Darcy Wakaluk wasn’t good enough to remain with the Sabres and he is only a backup for the North Stars.

But the perennial minor leaguer stopped 39 shots at Buffalo to get his first shutout and end the Sabres’ seven-game (5-0-2) unbeaten streak.

Winnipeg 4, Calgary 1--John LeBlanc scored twice at Winnipeg and the Jets strengthened their grip on second place in the Smythe Division.

Bob Essensa stopped 33 shots and the Jets scored on three power plays to extend their unbeaten string to 3-0-2.
