The steady rain that pelted San Diego last week has gone, but its bigger, stronger brethren will arrive today, authorities said.

“We’re expecting a storm that will park itself and give us periods of rain, lasting on and off during the whole week,” said Wally Cegiel, forecaster for the National Weather Service in San Diego. The storm has the potential to drop “maybe a half inch of rain a day,” Cegiel said.

Strong winds of moderate gale strength will accompany the rain as it passes through San Diego, the forecaster said.

“We will have gusty winds near 30 miles per hour in most areas, and as high as 40 miles per hour in the mountains,” Cegiel said.

The weather service has placed an alert for heavy surf on Monday. Waves cresting at 3 to 6 feet are expected, with occasional 10-foot breakers, Cegiel said.

Forecasters expect a moderate sea breeze of 10 to 18 m.p.h. at the beaches today.

The high temperatures in all areas today and Monday will be near 64 degrees, the weather service said. The lows will be between 49 and 55 degrees in the coastal area, and 50 degrees in the inland areas.

The storm that ended Friday dropped 1.22 inches of rain in San Diego, bringing the total amount of rainfall this rainy season to six inches.

According to the weather service, the normal amount of rainfall for this time of year is 5.64 inches.
