Norwegian speedskater Johann-Olav Koss has been hospitalized for treatment of an inflamed pancreas and might not participate in the Games, team doctor Thor Endsjo said.

“He is improving and should be discharged (today), but there is some doubt if he will be able to start in the competition,” Endsjo added.

Koss, the reigning world all-round champion, holds the world records in 5,000- and 10,000-meter speedskating. He is a top contender for the gold medal in the those events and the 1,500 meters.

Koss was taken to a hospital in the Bavarian town of Traunstein. He had been completing his preparations for the Games in southern Germany.

Koss was expected to arrive in Albertville on Tuesday.

The men’s competition will begin with the 5,000 meters Thursday, a distance at which Koss holds the world record.
