City Asks Postal Service for a Single ZIP Code

Divide West Hollywood by three or more ZIP codes and what do you get? An identity crisis and inferior mail delivery, claim city officials who are lobbying for a single ZIP code.

“We are our own city. Many people believe strongly in having our own identity and own ZIP code,” said City Councilwoman Abbe Land. In pursuit of that goal, the City Council voted last week to begin negotiations with the U.S. Post Office for one ZIP code.

Postal officials say the city now has three: 90046, 90048 and 90069. Land maintains there may be as many as five.

There’s more at stake than image, she argues. The city would enjoy more efficient mail delivery if it didn’t have to share all its ZIP codes with adjacent Los Angeles.

David Mazer, a Postal Service spokesman in Los Angeles, said he doubts that ZIP codes are at the root of any mail delivery problems that may exist in West Hollywood.
