Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Haitian Arrested in Slaying of Hasidic
A Haitian immigrant was arrested in the fatal stabbing of a Hasidic woman in the Crown Heights district of Brooklyn last week. Police said the suspect, Romane Lafond, 23, lived less than half a mile from the victim, Phyllis LaPine, 37, and had a record of six previous arrests in crimes, including burglary and sexual abuse. The killing of LaPine, 37, had provoked fear of renewed violence in the area, and about 300 Hasidics had marched on a local police station, demanding action. Crown Heights was the scene of race riots last August, after a black child was struck by a car driven by a Jew and a rabbinical student was slain by black youths.
