SANTA PAULA : 2 Schools Named Historic Landmarks
The Santa Paula Planning Commission designated two schools as city and county historical landmarks Tuesday.
Isbell School, the Santa Paula Elementary School District’s only school for grades six through eight, and the Barbara Webster School, a computer technology and science magnet school, are the city’s third and fourth schools to be designated historic landmarks.
The county Cultural Heritage Board recommended to Santa Paula officials on Jan. 29 that the two schools become county historic landmarks.
Isbell School, built in 1926, was named for Santa Paula resident Olive Mann Isbell, who opened the first public school in California in 1846. Barbara Webster School, built in 1925, was named for its first principal.
McKevett School and Santa Paula Union High School already are city and county historic landmarks. The Little Red Schoolhouse, a one-room school on the outskirts of eastern Santa Paula, is on the National Register of Historic Landmarks.
