USC 68, California 62--Lisa Leslie scored 32 points, had 16 rebounds and became the second Trojan women’s player to score more than 1,000 points by her sophomore year. All-time USC scorer Cheryl Miller was the first.

Twelve USC women have scored more than 1,000 points.

The Trojans limited 22nd-ranked Cal to 29% shooting in taking control in the first half, and USC made eight of 11 free throws down the stretch to finish off the victory.

Leslie beat the Bears’ Trisha Stafford in their personal battle. Stafford had 30 points and 14 rebounds.

USC is 14-6, 7-3. Cal is 15-5, 7-3.

“Lisa had a great game,” Coach Marianne Stanley said, “but I thought our perimeter people, (Tammy) Story, (Joni) Easterly, (Tracy) Adams and (Linda) Kennedy, did a good job of handling the ball, even though they didn’t have that many points.”

Story was the leader among that group with eight points.

“They executed our offense, and that was a key,” Stanley said. “Cal’s offense in the second half was almost entirely Stafford at the free-throw line. Our defense really held them in check.”

Stafford made 14 of 20 free throws.
