Demonstrators Protest Mental Health Cuts

CARSON CITY, Nev. — About 20 mental health advocates held a candlelight vigil in front of the Nevada Capitol late Friday to protest $3.8 million in budget cuts in state programs for the mentally ill.
At the same time, the man in charge of the programs disclosed that unexpected federal Medicaid funds may enable the state to contract out many of the eliminated services to private counselors or organizations. Brian Lahren, chief of the state Mental Hygiene-Mental Retardation Division, said half of the lost services or a larger percentage could be restored through use of the new Medicaid funds.
