Earnhardt Wins at Daytona Again in a Tuneup for Today’s 500
Dale Earnhardt won his fifth Busch Grand National race at Daytona International Raceway when he drove his Chevrolet Lumina to victory Saturday in the Goody’s 300.
It was his third consecutive Grand National victory here and his third on the track in as many days.
He won a 125-mile qualifying race Thursday and the IROC race on Friday.
Earnhardt, using Saturday’s race as a tuneup for today’s Daytona 500, led 101 of the 120 laps before an estimated 110,000.
Ernie Irvan, last year’s Daytona 500 winner, was second, followed by Ward Burton, a Grand National driver making his first start on the high-banked tri-oval Daytona track.
Seven accidents, involving 27 cars, slowed the pace. The only injured drivers were Joe Nemechek and Robert Huffman, who suffered burns in separate accidents. Both were hospitalized for observation.
The victory was worth $38,068 to Earnhardt, who averaged 132.434 m.p.h.
