The British City of Birmingham Symphony, which will tour the United States in April, has canceled its California engagements, including one at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. According to Ernest Fleischmann, speaking for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Assn., which was to have sponsored Birmingham concerts at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, the ensemble did not receive the sponsorship that had been anticipated. Therefore, it will not have sufficient funds to travel to the West Coast. The orchestra will play in New York, New Haven, Conn., Boston and Washington. It had been scheduled to appear in San Francisco as well as in Los Angeles and Costa Mesa.
