San Clemente’s Andino Upset at Surfing Event
Nathan Acker of Santa Cruz advanced to the quarterfinals of the $20,000 Nissan Open pro surfing competition Sunday at Santa Cruz by upsetting former U.S. champion Dino Andino of San Clemente in the third round.
Acker edged defending U.S. champion Mike Parsons of San Clemente in the third-round heat, and eliminated Andino, who finished third.
Acker and Parsons advanced to today’s quarterfinals, along with Todd Miller of Costa Mesa, Shane Beschen of San Clemente and Matt Archbold of San Clemente. The top two surfers from each heat advance to the next round.
Others eliminated Sunday were Shane Stoneman of San Juan Capistrano, John Parmenter of Huntington Beach, Darren Brilhart of Newport Beach, Bryan Pottger of Fountain Valley and Terence McNulty of Capistrano Beach.
Pat Caldwell of San Clemente advanced to the second round in the bodyboarding division.
