Apparently distraught over the recent gang-style slaying of his teen-age son, a Los Angeles man visited the site of the murder at dusk Monday and, with a single gunshot to the head, took his own life, police said.

Lt. Jim Rubert of the Police Department’s Newton Area station said officers found the dead man clutching a rosary in his right hand and a handgun in the other.

“You think you’ve seen it all, and then something like this comes along,” Rubert said.

The body of the 45-year-old man was discovered about 5:45 p.m. in an industrial area in the 6600 block of Stanford Avenue. Police were called to that scene last Wednesday when the man’s 16-year-old son was fatally shot by one of two men who walked up to him and opened fire.

Rubert said the youth’s homicide was apparently gang-related, and that the assailants remain at large.

The lieutenant said the name of the father was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
