DuBois Sisters Aren’t Just Lounging Around : * Comedy: The fictional siblings, appearing at Gem Theatre tonight, hope to take musical act on the road.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

After more than 10 years playing the lounge of a Santa Ana restaurant, the musical DuBois sisters are hoping to take their act to the big city--maybe even the Big Apple.

The four sisters, with four different singing styles and four different, long-lost fathers, are a fictional offshoot of the Orange County Crazies, an improvisational comedy troupe that has been playing around the county since early 1990.

They were born as one skit in the Crazies’ repertory, an act that took audience requests for popular songs in unconventional styles--”Itsy Bitsy Spider” as Judy Garland might have done it, for example. Then, last June, the sisters branched out on their own, launching a stage show titled “Ahhh . . . Those Lounge Swingin’ DuBois Sisters.”

The show is back, starting tonight, for three shows at the Gem Theatre in Garden Grove. It has been considerably retooled since its last appearance: two new songs, lots of new dialogue and a sweeping overhaul of the cast. Three of the four sisters have been recast, as has their dead mother (who makes numerous ghostly appearances) and three of the four male supporting roles.

Many of the changes were made with an eye toward taking the show on the road. In fact, this may be the last Orange County appearance for the DuBoises, if all goes according to the ambitious plans of Cherie Kerr, producer and artistic director for both the Crazies and the DuBois sisters. “Our ultimate goal is to take this thing to New York,” with an intermediate stop in Los Angeles, Kerr says.

Plans aren’t firm, but Kerr insists says that talks are proceeding with venue operators and investors for an off-Broadway version of the show. Talks are also moving forward on a Los Angeles run for the sisters, possibly in the fall, she said.

The stage show still concludes with the request segment, but first it provides a bit of history on the DuBoises: sibling rivalries, a search for the identities of their respective fathers, love interests and the periodic visits from Mom, who comes in on everything from roller skates to a pogo stick.

Orange County references are sprinkled throughout the show--the Santa Ana Reuben’s restaurant lounge where the sisters perform, the Stanton trailer park where they live--but those probably will change if the show moves on, Kerr says.

Meanwhile, the Crazies are getting ready to move into a permanent home for their new revue, “The Wizard of Orange,” due to open Feb. 29. The Crazies have been moving from theater to theater but now will share a Santa Ana home with the Pacific Symphony, which rehearses in the city-owned space at 115 E. Santa Ana Blvd.

The Crazies will perform at the 150-seat theater each Saturday night, except when their schedule conflicts with the orchestra’s. Also, Kerr says, they hope to launch all-improvisation Friday night shows in spring. The Crazies will also use the space for improv classes and other functions.

* “Ahhh . . . Those Lounge Swingin’ DuBois Sisters” will be performed at 8 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday at the Gem Theatre, 12852 Main St. in Garden Grove. Tickets: $12 to $18. Information: (714) 840-1406.

THE EYES HAVE IT: Elsewhere on the comedy scene, Fullerton’s Teatro Cometa brings in a comedy/mime duo, Ruben and Mariah, for performances Friday and Saturday.

The show’s Spanish title, which translates as “Comedy for the Eyes,” describes the essence of the performance, according to Ruben Gerard, who works with partner Mariah Taylor. “Basically, it’s a visual comedy show,” the Los Alamitos resident said. The approach is partly a reaction to the verbal comedy that dominates stand-up stages, he said.

Their use of the word mime to describe themselves may be a bit misleading, however. “We don’t wear white-face,” said Gerard. “It’s not straightforward dogmatic mime. It’s more influenced by silent-film comedians.”

* Ruben and Mariah will perform Friday and Saturday at the Teatro Cometa playhouse, 116 1/2 Amerige Ave., Fullerton. Tickets: $7. Information: (714) 680-3691.
