Catherine O’Neill Will Challenge Sen. Rosenthal

Share

Democrat Catherine O’Neill, a leader in the successful fight to overturn the Metro Green Line rail car contract that had been awarded to Sumitomo Corp., announced Wednesday that she is running against veteran state Sen. Herschel Rosenthal in a West Los Angeles-San Fernando Valley district.

O’Neill, who lost a bid for the state Senate in 1972, joins what could become a crowded field of Democratic candidates. Assemblyman Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) filed a declaration of intent Tuesday to challenge Rosenthal. But Hayden also kept his options open by declaring his intent to run for reelection to the Assembly.

Five other candidates have also filed declarations of intent in the district. Rosenthal has long represented much of the solidly Democratic district.
