Britain’s Recession Is Worst Since the 1930s: Britain is in the grips of its longest recession since the Great Depression, government figures show. Gross domestic product--excluding volatile North Sea crude oil production--fell 0.4% in the last quarter of 1991, the sixth straight drop. The recession of the early 1980s lasted only five quarters. The statistics dealt another blow to the ruling Conservative Party ahead of an election that is coming soon.
