WEEKEND TV : Taxes, Environment, War and the Vote

Taxes, the environment and the Gulf War are bound to be central to this year’s presidential contest, and television will attempt this weekend to address what impact all three will have on individuals even after the campaign rhetoric fades away.

As April 15 begins to loom, Faith Daniels offers tax tips Sunday at 1 p.m. on Channel 28 in this year’s version of the annual PBS special, “Tax Break ’92.”

TBS, meanwhile, launches its “Save the Earth” campaign Sunday at 5 p.m. with “One Child--One Voice,” in which children express their hopes for the future. The program repeats at 8:30 p.m. The network’s “National Geographic Explorer” features a special at 6 p.m. that documents the ecological aftermath of last year’s war in the Persian Gulf. Then at 8 p.m., “Network Earth” examines how three families deal with such environmental issues as biodiversity, toxic waste and the greenhouse effect.

“Midday Sunday” addresses environmental issues facing Los Angeles, including air pollution, traffic congestion, water quality and household hazardous waste, at 11 a.m. on Channel 11.

And just for fun, Nickelodeon will debut Ren & Stimpy’s “lost episode” Sunday at 11 a.m. and again at 8 p.m. The new program features the network’s dog and cat cartoon tandem lost in a black hole.
