More important than how a man acts in times of comfort and convenience is how he responds to controversy and conflict. This is when the true character of a man shines through. If this is so, then Magic Johnson’s true character is almost blinding in its clarity.

Here he was, once again, doing what he did so well, and so often. Displaying his gifts through inspiration, motivation and demonstration. Transcending peoples and prejudices and getting to the heart of the matter. Showing that love--of friends, of family, of fans, of colleagues and of a game--has the stuff of revelation in it. Teaching me about myself. Stirring my passions. Making me feel a little more alive. Giving me a moment I will not soon forget.
