Karen A. Guidi, assistant director of the Ventura County Office of Emergency Services for more than seven years, has resigned to return with her husband and children to her home state of Virginia.

Guidi, whose resignation becomes effective Friday, has presided over the county’s responses to disasters that range from the recent floods to the Wheeler and Ferndale fires of 1985. She will be sorely missed in the county, said Sheriff John V. Gillespie, Guidi’s immediate supervisor. “She has handled herself as well as possible in every situation,” Gillespie said.

Guidi said she will become a full-time mother to her 4-month-old daughter, Veronica, and her son, Vincent, 2.

“I think they deserve at least as much as I have put into my professional career,” said Guidi, a registered nurse who previously worked at the Ventura County Medical Center emergency room.

Gillespie said the county expects to replace Guidi next month.

Guidi’s husband, Donald Louviere, a soil conservationist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture who has worked extensively with Ventura County growers, accepted a similar post in Gate City, Va.
