HUNTINGTON BEACH : Trustees to Discuss Budget Reductions

Share

Huntington Beach Union High School District trustees on Tuesday will hold a public hearing on Supt. David Hagen’s recommendations to slash spending by $3.1 million.

The Board of Trustees will discuss the proposed reductions but will not adopt a final package of cuts until March 10.

More than 150 parents, teachers and other employees packed the board meeting room two weeks ago to hear Hagen outline his recommendations for next year’s $80-million budget. As many as twice that number are expected to turn out Tuesday.

The meeting is to start at 7:30 p.m. at the district office at 10251 Yorktown Ave. in Huntington Beach.

Employees at the Feb. 11 meeting began taking positions against one another, lobbying on behalf of their own groups. The debate is expected to intensify Tuesday.

Hagen has recommended that 53 1/2 full-time jobs be eliminated to help bridge the spending gap.

At least 17 non-teaching employees would be laid off under his plan, and fifteen teachers, four school nurses and six psychologists would either be dismissed or reassigned. The district has eliminated $14.5 million in yearly spending during the past five years, but Hagen maintains that it cannot reduce costs further without cutting some key positions.
