COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : No. 7 Indiana Makes Itself at Home on No. 6 Ohio State’s Court, 86-80

Sixth-ranked Ohio State had not lost a home game at St. John Arena in more than two years, a streak that was at 30 games when No. 7 Indiana arrived in Columbus, Ohio, Sunday for a Big Ten Conference showdown.

Indiana ended the streak, and took over first place in the conference, with an 86-80 victory.

Calbert Cheaney scored 28 points for Indiana, 20-4 overall and 11-2 in the Big Ten.

The Hoosiers made 10 consecutive shots during a 26-8 run.

Ohio State (17-5, 9-3) had not lost at St. John Arena since an 84-75 loss to Michigan State on Feb. 10, 1990. The 30-game home winning streak was the second longest in the nation behind Nevada Las Vegas’ 46.

Indiana’s Alan Henderson, who did not play during the Hoosiers’ 91-83 victory over the Buckeyes in Bloomington, Ind., on Jan. 14, scored 24 points and had nine rebounds. Damon Bailey did not score until the final minute of the first half, but finished with 17 points.

“Each kid who played contributed today,” Indiana Coach Bob Knight said. “Cheaney had a great game offensively and Henderson had a total game--it was his best of the year.”

Ohio State led by as many as eight points during the first half. The Buckeyes led, 36-32, after two free throws by Tom Brandewie with 2:50 to play in the half.

But Indiana, which made eight of 12 three-point shots, scored 10 of the last 12 points of the half, including two three-point baskets by Bailey that helped the Hoosiers to a 42-38 halftime lead.

Indiana made its last seven shots of the first half, then made three in a row to start the second, completing the 26-8 run for a 49-38 lead. Cheaney scored nine points, Bailey eight, Greg Graham five and Henderson four during the run. Indiana made 65% of its shots during the second half.

“We just couldn’t do anything to stop them,” Ohio State Coach Randy Ayers said.

Jim Jackson scored 24 points for Ohio State.

Lawrence Funderburke, a transfer from Indiana, had eight points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots for the Buckeyes.

No. 9 Missouri 66, No. 8 Oklahoma State 52--Jevon Crudup scored 19 points as the Tigers overcame the absence of leading-scorer Anthony Peeler to defeat the Cowboys, who were without standout Byron Houston, in a Big Eight Conference game at Columbia, Mo.

Peeler, the Big Eight’s leading scorer with a 22.8 average, was suspended for a game for skipping classes. Houston, who averages 20 points and nine rebounds, has a sprained ankle.

Oklahoma State (21-5, 5-5) made only one basket during the first 8 1/2 minutes. The Cowboys were held to their lowest point total of the season and lost for the fifth time in six games after a 20-0 start. Reggie Smith added 10 points for Missouri (19-4, 7-3), which beat Oklahoma State for the 15th consecutive time at the Hearnes Center.

No. 13 Kentucky 84, Georgia 73--Jamal Mashburn scored 26 points and the Wildcats (20-5, 9-3) used a 15-1 second half-run to beat the Bulldogs in a Southeastern Conference game at Athens, Ga. Litterial Green scored 17 for Georgia (12-11, 5-7).

DePaul 85, No. 16 Florida State 75--The Blue Demons’ victory was marred by an ankle injury to David Booth, the team’s leading scorer, who was sidelined with just under 16 minutes to play.

Stephen Howard scored 27 points and made six free throws in the final 1:34 to help DePaul (18-6) beat the Seminoles (18-8) at St. Petersburg, Fla., their second consecutive victory over a ranked opponent.

No. 25 Georgetown 72, No. 17 Syracuse 68--Alonzo Mourning scored 27 points and the Hoyas (17-6, 10-4) held off the Orangemen (16-7, 8-6) at Syracuse, N.Y., to tighten their grip on first place in the Big East Conference.

OTHER GAMES

Freshman Robert Bennett of Illinois (11-12, 5-8) rebounded his own missed free throw and scored with one second left in overtime to ensure a 77-72 Big Ten Conference victory over Iowa (15-8, 7-6) at Champaign, Ill. Acie Earl scored 19 points for Iowa. . . . Dirk Surles scored 28 points and Sonni Holland added 26 for George Washington (15-9, 7-6) in an 85-78 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over West Virginia (17-8, 9-4) at Washington that knocked the Mountaineers out of the conference lead.
