Citizens who witnessed the shooting death of a man at a bus stop in Long Beach chased the alleged gunman into a nearby construction site and pointed him out to police, authorities said Tuesday.

A caller reported hearing someone scream and gunshots in the area of 1st Street and Gaviota Avenue about 11:45 p.m. Monday, Lt. Ken Schack said. “After the shooting several citizens chased the suspect and were able to identify him when the officers arrived,” Schack said.

The suspect, Lonzo Johnson, 30, of Long Beach, ran into a construction site at Ocean Boulevard and Cherry Avenue. Officers surrounded the site, and after Johnson failed to come out, they sent in a police dog to find him. Johnson was arrested on suspicion of murder.
