John L. Maloney; Stationery Stores Owner

John (Jack) L. Maloney, who owned Maloney’s Stationers, has died at his Northridge home. He was 64.

Maloney died Tuesday of complications of an aneurysm, said his son, Dennis Maloney of Malibu.

Born in Newton, Mass., Maloney served in the Navy during World War II. After graduating from Boston Fisher Business School in 1948, Maloney came to California and worked as a salesman for Carter Ink Co. In 1950, he was hired as a salesman by Bush’s Stationers and later became general manager.

After company owner Tom Lannen died in 1963, Maloney became sole owner of the chain and changed the name to Maloney’s Stationers. Maloney was active with the company, which has stores in Van Nuys, Granada Hills and Westlake Village, until the time of his death.

Maloney was past president of the Van Nuys Chamber of Commerce, Los Angeles Board of Water and Power Commissioners, Van Nuys Kiwanis Club, Industrial Assn. of the San Fernando Valley, National Office Products Assn. and the Lakeside Country Club.

He also was a director for Valley Federal Savings & Loan Assn., member of the Cal State Northridge Community Advisory Board and former Valley Presbyterian Hospital board member.

The San Fernando Valley Associates of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation named Maloney and his wife Premiere Parents in 1985 in honor of their parenting skills and achievements in the community and business world.

In addition to his son, Dennis, Maloney is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ann English Maloney; sons, Michael Maloney of Valencia and John Maloney of Pales Verdes Estates; daughters, Kathleen Maloney of Valencia, Terri Cossavella of Newport Beach and Marybeth Thicke of Los Angeles, and 11 grandchildren.

Visitation is planned from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Bastian & Perrott Mortuary, 18728 Parthenia St., Northridge, which is handling the arrangements. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 18400 Kinzie St., Northridge. Burial will follow at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills. Donations can be made to the Jack Maloney Memorial Scholarship Fund at the National Office Products Assn., 301 N. Fairfax St., Alexandria, Va. 22314-2696.
