MCI Wins Long-Distance Pact With U.S.: In an important telecommunications coup, MCI Communications Corp. said it won a pact to provide international long-distance telephone service to federal departments and agencies. The Washington-based firm said the agreement will save the government an estimated 25% over current costs. The pact, initially for two years with three one-year options, will combine federal telephone traffic to more than 200 foreign locations. MCI said the agreement could generate up to $100 million in revenues over five years. Competitors for the contract included US Sprint and American Telephone & Telegraph Co., which now supplies most of the international long-distance service to the government agencies that make most of these calls.
