Samples to Be Taken in Effort to Reopen Beach

Workers from the Hyperion Treatment Plant will take water samples today in Marina del Rey to determine when the last stretch of beach closed because of storm-related sewage spills and runoff can reopen.
The beaches from the Ventura County line south to Long Beach were closed this month after partially treated sewage and some polluted storm-drain runoff poured into Santa Monica Bay.
Last week, most of the shoreline was reopened when it was determined that the bacteria levels had dipped to acceptable levels, said county Health Department spokeswoman Sharon Wanglin. The beach at Marina del Rey, however, remains closed because the levels were unsafe.
Crews from the Hyperion plant will test samples taken from the beach to determine if the unsafe bacteria levels have subsided, she said.
