California IN BRIEF : SANTA ANA : CHP Ordered to Stop Bus Citations
California Highway Patrol officers in Santa Ana were ordered by an official of Gov. Pete Wilson’s Administration to stop citing overweight buses in the wake of charges that an Orange County line that carries mostly Latino day workers had been singled out unfairly. The order noted pending state efforts to have federal rules on weight standards changed. The citation issue arose last fall when a CHP officer began citing buses on a line that carries mainly Latino day workers between Santa Ana and south Orange County. CHP officials denied any wrongdoing and said CHP units in other parts of the state would soon be enforcing the weight limits.
