Aztecs Stop SCC

Rob Callaway and Benji Grigsby combined to strike out 15 batters as the San Diego State baseball team avenged an earlier loss to Southern California College, 10-1, Friday at Smith Field.

Callaway, a right-handed senior, struck out eight and allowed two hits in 5 2/3 innings to improve to 1-2. Grigsby, a right-handed junior transfer, struck out seven, yielded one hit in the final 3 1/3 and picked up his second save.

Grigsby has 31 strikeouts in 20 innings.

Sean Maharg, SCC’s No. 2 batter, opened the scoring in the top of the first with a home run to center, but it was all SDSU (10-5) from there as the Aztecs scored one in the second and fourth, four in the fifth, and two in the seventh and eighth. SCC fell to 2-5-1.

Jason Ledford went three for five with two doubles and a run scored, and teammate Richie Juarez was three for five with two runs.

The Aztecs had only four hits in a 4-2 loss to SCC on Feb. 5.

Despite a seven-run ninth inning, the University of San Diego fell to Loyola Marymount, 15-13, in both team’s West Coast Conference opener.

USD led 2-1 after four innings and 4-1 after 4 1/2. Loyola, however, scored seven in the bottom of the fifth and six in the sixth for an insurmountable lead.

USD outhit the Lions, 14-13, with infielders Chad Boyd going three for five with three RBIs and Dave Pingree two for two with a home run.

Matt Marks was two for four with a home run and three RBIs for Loyola (5-7, 1-0). Torero freshman Mike Saipe (University City) took his first college loss in four starts and two decisions.

Dion Dice scattered three hits and Miguel Abascal had a two-run homer as Point Loma Nazarene defeated visiting Master’s, 5-1, in a District 3 game. Rich Miller and Dave Swearingen added two hits each for PLNC (5-5-1, 2-1).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State, ranked 12th, defeated No. 22 Utah in a Western Athletic Conference match in San Diego, 6-3.

The Aztecs’ top four singles players--Eva Olivarez, Sue Hawke, Nicole Storto and Susheel Gulati--all won without losing a set, and the No. 1 doubles team of Hawke-Storto won the tightest match of the day, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. SDSU is 5-0, Utah 3-8.
