Twelve inmates were injured in a brawl at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho’s north facility in Castaic after a fight broke out over a card game, authorities said Saturday.

The inmates had completed dinner and a group of men were playing cards about 6:30 p.m. Friday when two inmates began arguing, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Dennis Ryzow said.

Other inmates joined in and about 25 men became involved in the brawl, Ryzow said. Twelve received minor injuries. Five were treated for facial cuts at San Fernando Community Hospital, Ryzow said.

About 20 deputies broke up the melee in about 20 minutes, Ryzow said.

“This happens all the time,” he said. “It’s the same thing that happens on the street.”

There have been about three disputes at the facility since the beginning of the year, Ryzow said. “The inmates get upset with their position in life and these things happen.”

No weapons were used in the melee, although inmates traded punches and threw food trays, Ryzow said.

Inmates involved in the incident have been reassigned to different housing locations, Ryzow said.
