Building on the Ropes Finally Falls

Share

A hillside apartment building undercut by recent heavy rains was finally hauled down, tumbling down in a dramatic slide that ended a favorite local cliffhanger.

Demolition workers exchanged “high-fives” and cheered as about two-thirds of the wooden building came crashing down the 150-foot slope Saturday. The rest of the building is to be demolished today.

The building bit the dust after crews wrapped it with three cables and then yanked twice--once to loosen the foundation and a second time to bring it down.

The building’s foundation was weakened when storms caused rockslides on the historic hill about two weeks ago.

The city decided to tear down the five-unit complex last week. The demolition stalled at least seven times last week, including once when a crane had a flat tire and again when cables snapped.
