Doc’s Next Date: Doc Severinsen will shuffle off to Buffalo to become the main pops conductor for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra when he leaves “The Tonight Show” in May. Severinsen takes over from Mitch Miller, who resigned last year; he will conduct his first Buffalo concert July 1. The bandleader also has been principal pops conductor for the Phoenix Symphony for eight years. Looking ahead to the changes on “The Tonight Show” with the impending departure of host Johnny Carson, Severinsen told the Buffalo News: “I’ve no doubt that the last day I walk out of there, it’ll be a very strange feeling. But I also have a hunch that I’ll get over it very quickly.”
