NHL ROUNDUP : Canadiens Rain on Islander Parade

Share

The New York Islanders honored Mike Bossy on Tuesday night at Uniondale, N.Y., but the Montreal Canadiens spoiled the party.

Brent Gilchrist’s second goal of the game with 2:21 remaining enabled the Canadiens to win, 4-3, and deal a blow to the Islanders’ playoff hopes.

With the Pittsburgh Penguins winning, the Islanders, playing without two more injured players, dropped five points behind the Stanley Cup champions in the race for the last playoff spot in the Patrick Division.

Islander goalie Glenn Healy, who underwent surgery to have the tip of his right index finger reattached after it was severed during practice, probably will be sidelined for a month. Center Rob DiMaio has injured wrist ligaments and is sidelined for the season.

The injuries have slowed the drive of the Islanders, who appeared to be ready to overtake the Penguins.

Bossy, a Hall of Fame right wing who had nine consecutive seasons of 50 or more goals, was the leading goal scorer for the team that won four consecutive titles in the 1970s. His No. 22 was retired in pregame ceremonies.

It was also the occasion to introduce two new Islanders, U.S. Olympians Scott Lachance and Marty McInnis. Neither rookie was a factor.

Kirk Muller also scored twice for the Canadiens, who lead the Adams Division by 15 points.

Minnesota 3, Washington 1--The North Stars won at Landover, Md., and hurt the Capitals’ title hopes.

The North Stars had lost seven of their previous eight games.

Goalie Darcy Wakaluk had a shutout until Paul McDermid scored six minutes into the third period.

The victory gave the North Stars a seven-point lead over Toronto for the last playoff spot in the Norris Division. The loss left the Capitals eight points behind the New York Rangers in the Patrick Division.

“Nobody’s panicking,” Capital goalie Don Beaupre said. “At this point the last two years, we weren’t assured of being in the playoffs. In that case, you’re whipping the horse to make it. If you’re already right there, you’re not whipping the horse until the end.”

The Capitals will play 11 of their 13 March games at home. Thus far, they have two home losses.

Hartford 4, Boston 0--The goaltending of Peter Sidorkiewicz at Hartford helped the Whalers end a long winless streak against the Bruins.

Sidorkiewicz stopped 30 shots for his second shutout in 10 days.

The Whalers had been winless in 12 previous games against the Bruins. John Cullen, skating double shifts to shake up the offense, scored the first goal at 14:49 of the first period and also scored the last goal.

Quebec 4, Buffalo 4--Mats Sundin scored on a penalty shot during the second period at Quebec to help the Nordiques get the tie.

Sundin was tripped on a breakaway by defenseman Doug Bodger after Sundin stole the puck from Pat LaFontaine.

The Nordiques have won one of their last 17 games.

Winnipeg 4, Detroit 3--The Jets moved closer to a playoff berth by winning at Detroit.

Phil Sykes’ goal with 5:26 to play broke a 3-3 tie and enabled the Jets to increase their lead over fifth-place Calgary to four points.

Pittsburgh 6, Calgary 3--The Penguins aired their gripes against Coach Scotty Bowman during a team meeting Monday, then took their wrath out on the Flames at Calgary in this game.

Kevin Stevens scored twice for the Penguins, who extended their lead over the Islanders to five points in the fight for a playoff spot.
