LOS ANGELES : Man Removed From Court After Booing Karlin

Share

A man protesting against Superior Court Judge Joyce A. Karlin over her controversial sentencing of a Korean grocer who shot and killed a black teen-ager was removed from a courtroom Friday as the judge participated in a court ceremony in downtown Los Angeles.

William (Tut) Hayes was escorted from a courtroom as Karlin and 13 other judges took part in an enrobing ceremony for new Superior Court judges.

When Karlin was introduced, a crowd of onlookers, including several judges, clapped and gave her a standing ovation. But Hayes yelled “Boo!” and was removed from the room by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies, sheriff’s spokesman Fidel Gonzales said, “at the request of (Presiding Judge) Ricardo A. Torres.”

Hayes was briefly detained and released, but he contended that the action was unfair, saying: “It’s OK to clap, but not OK to show displeasure.”
