Track and field’s governing body cleared the way for the readmittance of South Africa, ensuring the nation’s athletes will be eligible to compete in the Summer Olympics at Barcelona, Spain.

Nebiolo said the great majority of IAAF Council members favor South Africa’s return. The IAAF’s softened stance on South Africa was viewed partly as a result of Samaranch’s decision to make Nebiolo an IOC member.

In a sign of a new spirit of close cooperation between the two organizations, Nebiolo and Samaranch also agreed that the former Soviet Union would field a unified team in Barcelona.
