NHL ROUNDUP : Rangers Hit an Unexpected Roadblock, 5-4

The Philadelphia Flyers, last in the Patrick Division, made things a little tighter for the division-leading New York Rangers with a 5-4 victory Saturday at Philadelphia.

Brian Benning had three assists and Mark Recchi added a goal and two assists for the Flyers, who ended a four-game losing streak against the Rangers.

New York’s division lead was shaved to five points over the Washington Capitals.

The Flyers are seven points behind Pittsburgh, which holds the final playoff spot in the division.

Calgary 5, St. Louis 1--Gary Roberts scored his 38th and 39th goals as the Flames won at Calgary.

The Flames moved to within two points of the Winnipeg Jets, who hold the final playoff spot in the Smythe Division.

Vancouver 5, Hartford 1--Igor Larionov set up three goals and the Canucks won at Hartford, Conn., assuring themselves of a winning record for the first time since the 1975-76 season.

Greg Adams and Pavel Bure scored two goals each as the Canucks, the Smythe Division leaders, improved to 36-21-10.

Washington 3, New Jersey 2--Dale Hunter scored with 2:11 left in overtime and the Capitals won at Landover, Md., to end a five-game winless streak.

The Capitals ended an 0-3-2 skid and moved six points ahead of third place New Jersey in the Patrick Division.

Chicago 2, Boston 1--Jeremy Roenick became the third Blackhawk to score 50 goals in a victory over the Bruins at Boston.

Bobby Hull and Al Secord also scored 50 goals for Chicago.

Montreal 8, N.Y. Islanders 2--Gilbert Dionne, who has eight goals in five games, scored twice to lead the Canadiens at Montreal.

Detroit 4, Quebec 4--Ray Sheppard’s breakaway goal at 14:35 of the third period got the Red Wings a tie at Quebec.
