PASADENA : Man Pleads Not Guilty in Fatal Triple Shooting at Bar

A janitor accused of fatally shooting three men at a Pasadena-area bar Feb. 27 pleaded not guilty Monday to three counts of murder, with special allegations involving the use of a handgun and multiple killings. Upon conviction, the charges could result in the death penalty, court officials said.

Juan Miramontes, 41, entered the plea in Pasadena Municipal Court, where he was ordered to return April 1 to set a preliminary hearing date. He is being held without bail in the slayings of Travis Loller, 54, of Monrovia; Paul Walton Joyce, 39, and Johnny Lee Rogers, 26, both of Pasadena.

The shooting occurred at the R-Place bar on East Colorado Boulevard in an unincorporated area east of Pasadena. Miramontes told sheriff’s deputies that he fired his revolver because the three men were talking about him and posed a threat. But investigators said they believe that the bar patrons had been paying no attention to Miramontes.
