GARDEN GROVE : Firefighter Warns About Solicitations

Share

City firefighters have joined other fire departments in the county to sound the alarm about an Orange County-based organization that allegedly solicits residents on the telephone to buy tickets to a fund-raising event for disabled firefighters.

Garden Grove Fire Capt. Bill Dumas said he has received many complaints for three or four years from residents who allege that the Foundation for Disabled Firefighters Inc. claims to represent the Garden Grove Firefighters Assn. and the Garden Grove Fire Department.

Dumas said Garden Grove firefighters are not represented by the foundation and do not support its efforts.

“What they’re doing with the money is totally unknown,” he said. “We don’t benefit from it.”

Dumas said he wrote a letter last month to the Disabled Firefighters group at a Fullerton address, warning that he would closely monitor any unauthorized used of the Garden Grove firefighters’ name in solicitations.

Dumas said he wrote in the letter that he would initiate “any and all means to stop such use.”

Efforts to reach the foundation by telephone were unsuccessful.
