EL CAJON : Man Ruled Guilty of Kidnaping at ATM

A jury Tuesday found a San Diego man guilty of kidnaping a customer at an automatic teller machine in El Cajon.

Gary Joe Wiley, 35, was convicted of kidnaping Kevin Crowder for ransom and robbery Sept. 20. The two charges carry a life sentence, Deputy Dist. Atty. Wes Schermann said.

Crowder let the ATM machine take his card at the 6:30 a.m. holdup, but then Wiley ordered Crowder at gunpoint to drive him to his home in Alpine. Once at the victim’s residence, Wiley got the ATM card of Crowder’s wife, and forced Crowder to accompany him to another bank.

Deputy sheriffs were notified and Wiley was arrested. Crowder was not hurt.

Wiley was also convicted of another robbery and possession of a firearm by an ex-felon. San Diego Municipal Judge Janet Kintner, sitting temporarily as a Superior Court judge, set sentencing for April 21.

Wiley will next appear in court March 17, when a retrial date on the two other holdups will be set, Schermann said. Wiley remains in County Jail without bail.
