A 2-year-old boy was bitten by his grandmother’s pit bull terrier Tuesday and was treated at South Coast Medical Center while the dog was placed into quarantine in the city’s animal shelter, authorities said.

The child, whose name was not released because of his age, and his mother were visiting his grandmother in Laguna Beach, Sgt. Ray Lardie said. He was playing in a room when the adults heard him scream.

The two women ran over and found his head in the mouth of the 5-year-old pit bull, which weighs about 75 pounds, Lardie said.

“They had to beat the dog with the telephone to make him let go,” Lardie said.

Hospital officials said the boy would be fine.
