HERMOSA BEACH : Admission Charge for Volleyball Spiked

Share

Hermosa Beach has spiked a proposal to charge admission for the beach volleyball championship the city has hosted for the last eight years, prompting the promoter of the event to threaten to move the contest.

The Assn. of Volleyball Professionals said it wants to install paid VIP seating around center court at all of the 24 cities on the 1992 tour to increase the professional aura of the sport, raise money and create a less raucous environment.

The Hermosa Beach City Council decided Tuesday that charging admission for a spot on the sand at its August tournament would be against the spirit of a public beach. The vote means that 19 cities have approved paid admission and two--Hermosa Beach and Honolulu--have rejected it. Seal Beach and San Diego have approved the concept, while Manhattan Beach will take up the matter next week.
