Opera Daring: The Mississippi Opera will stage a “daring” production of Debussy’s “Pelleas et Melisande” this weekend in an effort to both attract the hometown audience in Jackson and also snare some worldwide attention. The production features a three-dimensional backdrop of colors and fuzzy shapes that change quickly or slowly along with the mood of the singers. The effect is produced by about 20 slide projectors working together. Doves appear to flutter suddenly during one scene, and in another, eerie moonlight reflects off the damp walls of a sea cave. “One of the things this company needs to do is to always show our audiences something new . . . put the unpredictability back into it,” said Frank Marion Johnson, who took over the financially troubled company a year ago.
