Artesia population: 15,464
Election: April 14
On the ballot: Five candidates for three at-large seats
INCUMBENTS
Robert J. Jamison
Age: 69
Occupation: General engineer and building contractor
Remarks: “I have proven myself to be extremely citizen- and business-oriented. I am the only mayor and councilman ever to walk the entire city of Artesia, door to door, several times, earning the title of ‘The Walking Councilman,’ and have handled thousands of citizen requests.” Jamison has served on the council for 20 years.
Ronald H. Oliver
Age: 59
Occupation: Accountant
Remarks: “My primary concern is to keep expenses down and services up. I want to continue this financial philosophy. I’ve encouraged construction that has boosted sales tax revenue, permitting the city to provide high levels of services without additional costs. I have a good working relationship with the community and civic leaders, and a desire to maintain Artesia as a safe and progressive environment in which to raise families.” Oliver has served on the council since 1974.
CHALLENGERS
Tony Lima
Age: 46
Occupation: Real estate broker
Remarks: “I’m interested in the future of Artesia and its people. I want to promote communication with neighboring cities and government agencies.” He has owned Lima Realty Co. in Artesia for 19 years and is active in many civic organizations. He is concerned about the increasing gang violence, utility taxes, favoritism and unrepresented ethnic groups. “I think independently and will represent all citizens of Artesia equally.”
Isidro S. Menezes
Age: 52
Occupation: Realtor and insurance agent
Remarks: “Artesia is a ‘small-town’ city whose people have lived side by side in harmony and friendship. I pledge to work hard to preserve that small-town flavor, and to preserve our traditions.” Menezes has served on the Planning Commission since 1990. “I shall make myself accessible to all who contact me, and shall respond to problems and needs to the best of my ability. I promise my energetic effort in support of good, honest and economical city government, and to provide leadership in developing opportunities for all the people of our community.”
Bob Thornton
Age: 55
Occupation: Owner of a construction business
Remarks: “I feel I can bring new ideas to the city while keeping our small-town values. Our youth programs and parks are essential to our future, as is the need to continue the efforts for our senior citizens. We need to take a stand on drugs and gang violence, and address the issue of affordable housing. Something will have to be done soon about Artesia’s outdated sewer system. The City Council will face many crucial decisions in the future, and I would like to be part of that decision-making team.”
