Dr. Ira M. Horwitz, who had a family medical practice in North Hollywood for 30 years, has died at a North Hollywood hospital. He was 59.

A longtime Sherman Oaks resident, Horwitz died Thursday of complications of lung disease, said his wife, Marilyn Horwitz.

Born in Chicago, Horwitz completed undergraduate work at the University of Illinois and Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. After graduating from the University of Iowa Medical School in 1958, he moved to California and served as a captain in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1961.

Horwitz then established his practice in North Hollywood, where he continued to work until a year ago. Horwitz was on the staffs at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks Community Hospital and the Medical Center of North Hollywood, where he served as chief of staff in 1967, 1980, 1984 and 1985.

In addition to his wife of 16 years, Horwitz is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Horwitz and Marc Horwitz, both of San Diego; stepson Jeffrey Lowenthal of San Francisco; stepdaughter Marianne Lowenthal of Los Angeles; sister Dolores Stein of Chicago, and three grandchildren.

A funeral, with burial to follow, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park, 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, which is handling the arrangements. Contributions can be made in Horwitz’s name to the charity of the donor’s choice.
