An Oxnard man was slain outside a south Oxnard grocery store Thursday night, shot at least twice in the upper torso with a handgun, authorities said. His assailant remained at large late Thursday.

Manuel Albis, 21, was killed in an encounter with another man that was either gang-related or the result of a personal grudge, Oxnard Police Detective Tim Combs said.

The shooting took place about 6 p.m. on a sidewalk in front of the Dorija Food Mart at 2195 E. Channel Islands Blvd., Oxnard Police Sgt. Frank Porter said.

Albis was taken by ambulance to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where he died, Combs said.

Detectives interviewed potential witnesses, and said that they may know the identity of the gunman, Porter said.

“We have several leads and we are still pursuing our investigation,” Combs said.
