LA VERNE : Caltrans to Move on Plans to Extend Foothill Freeway

In a bid to accommodate the building boom brewing in western San Bernardino County, Caltrans on Friday said it will move ahead with plans to extend the Foothill Freeway east from La Verne through Claremont and eventually to Interstate 215 near San Bernardino.

The California Transportation Commission made the announcement possible by approving a $7.6-billion state transportation improvement program that included $129.2 million for the initial Los Angeles County end of the 28.2-mile freeway extension.

The project is designed to prevent the sluggish San Bernardino and Pomona freeways from clogging up, Caltrans officials said. The new freeway would run north of and parallel to those roads.

Planning and design work will start this year, Caltrans spokesman Russ Snyder said, and the construction work is scheduled to begin in 1998.

The entire freeway from La Verne to San Bernardino will be built in four segments and should be finished in 2001, Snyder said.
