BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Keough Released From Hospital

Angel pitcher Matt Keough was released from Scottsdale Memorial Hospital Friday and returned home to Coto de Caza less than four days after he underwent lifesaving brain surgery.

Keough was struck on the right side of his head by a foul ball Monday while sitting in the visitors’ dugout at Scottsdale Stadium. He underwent a 90-minute operation to remove a blood clot pressing on his brain and has progressed rapidly enough for doctors to predict he will make a full physical recovery.

Keough, 36, will be examined next week by Dr. Michael Sukoff of St. Joseph Hospital in Orange. He canceled a news conference Friday after his wife, Jeana, said his medication left him too groggy to converse.

Right-hander Don Robinson won the fifth spot in the rotation by pitching five solid innings in the Angels’ 6-4 victory over Milwaukee at rain-dampened Angels Stadium in Palm Springs. “I don’t know if he can handle a full menu of starts, so we may be better off making him our swingman and giving him 20 to 22 starts,” said Manager Buck Rodgers, who is still searching for his No. 4 starter.

Robinson flailed through the first inning, hanging two off-speed pitches that Paul Molitor and Darryl Hamilton hit for doubles as the Brewers scored two runs, but he gave up only one hit the rest of the way.

“His velocity was good,” said Rodgers, who used his experience as a guideline rather than a radar gun. “I go on hitter reaction, and the hitter reaction was outstanding--for Don Robinson, not for the hitters.”

Robinson, who was signed as a free agent last winter, was more secure about his prospects after Friday’s outing. “I feel better. I’m throwing the ball well,” said Robinson, who has a 3.27 earned-run average in 11 innings of spring training. “I might get a little more on my fastball, but I’m throwing all my pitches, which I don’t usually do this early. Now I am because I have to make this team. As long as I’m healthy, I’ll be all right.”

Von Hayes was three for four with a run batted in, and Bobby Rose drove in two runs with a second-inning double to lead the Angels’ offense. Mark Eichhorn pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first spring save.

Mark Langston has a mild inflammation in his right knee, according to a Magnetic Resonance Imaging test performed Thursday. However, he intends to pitch Sunday as scheduled. . . . Chuck Finley is to pitch three innings that day in his first full-squad appearance. . . . Closer Bryan Harvey, who was struck on the inside of his right arm by a line drive Wednesday, was held out of Friday’s game as a precaution. . . . Catcher John Orton, idled most of the spring by a sore right shoulder, threw at full strength Friday and is expected to play Sunday. . . . Left fielder Luis Polonia (sore left shoulder) might return Monday.
