For the first time in 139 games, Kansas did not make a three-point basket.

The Jayhawks, however, made 61% of their shots and scored 35 of their 42 baskets on layups, dunks or other inside shots in a 100-67 victory over Howard in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional.

Kansas (27-4), which missed six three-point attempts against Howard, had made at least one three-point basket in every game since March 5, 1988.

“We don’t worry about streaks,” said Kansas guard Rex Walters, who scored 10 points. “We’ve got some guys inside who can get the ball in the hole. We wanted to pound the ball inside.”

Seventeen of Kansas’ 21 field goals in the first half came within the shadow of the rim.

Greg Ostertag Kansas with 16 points. Adonis Jordan had 15 and Eric Pauley had 12.

Kansas, making its 22nd NCAA tournament appearance, never trailed but needed a 15-0 run midway through the second half to put the game out of reach.
