Rothenberg Needs Very Short Leash
Upon reading about the recent parole violation by Charles Rothenberg, who nine years ago horribly set his son on fire, disfiguring more than 90% of his body, I was disgusted to learn that such a man was once again set free (“Department of Corrections Officials Won’t Charge Rothenberg With Parole Violation,” March 7).
After serving only a six-year prison sentence, he has violated and eluded his parole officers twice in the past few years. How are we to be assured that allowing his freedom this time won’t lead to another escape or attempt on his son’s life?
Criminals are put on strict parole sentences for one specific reason: To protect the ones that they had previously violated. Obviously, this state’s Department of Corrections is not doing its job if (officials) are allowing such a dangerous man to escape without punishment.
Unfortunately, David Rothenberg couldn’t possibly feel safe knowing that his state does not make a strong enough effort on his behalf.
